The EU has well-established funding programmes for SMEs and not-for-profit organisations. SMEs in particular can access grant money for innovative and entrepreneurial work through a number of funding programmes in Horizon 2020. The EU has committed €80bn up to 2020 to fund research, innovation and excellence.

 

These funding programmes are highly competitive because they do not have the usual finance costs of equity, interest and debt repayment. They are therefore an attractive source of finance for innovative businesses and statistically the success rate for applications is low.
